Avdimou beach is about 1 kilometer in length and has a width of about 40 meters. In just 2 hours of cleaning a section of the beach, we managed to collect a total of:
- 18 full bags of trash
- 23 full bags of recyclable materials
We even managed to find a:
- baby stroller
- various furniture
- and beverage cans dating back to the late 1980s to early 90s!
Just the trash that was able to be put in bags came to a total weight of 250 kg.
It’s always tough seeing so much trash littered throughout a beach, a lovely turtle breeding beach nonetheless, but what’s even worse is when a majority of the items collected are made from materials that could have been recycled. From plastic and glass bottles to aluminum cans, no matter which direction you looked you were able to find something that could have been converted into something new. When an item is recycled, it reduces the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air pollution (from incineration), and water pollution (from landfilling).
“Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value.” – Buckminster Fuller
One big problem and reason as to why we see so much litter throughout our beaches is that there are not always trash and recycling bins available, however, it is no excuse to leave your waste on the ground. If you cannot find the appropriate bin to dispose of your rubbish, simply take it home with you where you can dispose of the item properly.
Set positive examples for your children, your friends, and the person lying in the sunbed next to you. We all need to be responsible for our waste and not rely on others to clean up after us. Remember to keep our land clean just as if it was your home – because it is!
Thank you again to everyone who helped us clean, we’re so thrilled to see so many people who are taking initiative to help the environment. Your passion and enthusiasm are what keeps us motivated. If you’d like to volunteer at our next cleanup event or even become a member of our organization please contact us 🙂
