Thank you to everyone who participated at our beach cleanup on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 @ Spyros Beach. Also, thank you to Windsurf City Cyprus and Toyota for helping to organize the event.
This was our first beach clean up in Larnaca. It was a great turnout. We had a total of 75 amazing, multinational volunteers ranging from age 2-63 that came from all areas of Cyprus and put in their efforts to help us clean Spyros Beach.
In just 1.5 hours of cleaning a section of the beach, we managed to collect a total of:
- 30 full bags of trash
- 22 full bags of recyclable materials
In total: 55 bags adding up to 560kg of waste, from plastic bags, beverage bottles, drinking straws, and much more. To help reduce your waste be sure to check out our online Eco Shop of environmentally friendly products.
Less Waste = Cleaner Planet
Spyros Beach is located near the Larnaca International Airport and is one that is designated for dogs. The few beaches in Cyprus that are dog-friendly are usually a little less welcoming compared to others as they are with no sunbeds or umbrellas and in remote locations. Dog owners are constantly fighting local authorities (and rightfully so) to allow dogs on more beaches. From our experience, humans are the ones leaving behind waste – not the dogs.
As this was a beach that allowed dogs, we were very surprised not to see any bins for dog waste. Some suggestions:
- Please make an effort to clean up after your pet. This will help convince the local authorities to designate more beaches to dogs.
- Once the waste is in the bag, make sure to put it in a bin. If there are no bins around, hold onto it until you find one. Putting the waste in a plastic bag and then leaving it on the beach is even worse than not cleaning it up at all. Keep in mind that plastic bags take 10-20 years to decompose. What’s best? Opt for wax paper or newspaper instead.
So just to recap, in 1.5 hours 560kg of trash was collected that should not have been there, to begin with. This big issue has a very small and simple solution..don’t litter! Littering is entirely a man-made problem, not created by dogs, and is entirely preventable. If you’d like to volunteer at our next cleanup event or even become a member of our organization please contact us for more information 🙂
After Cleanup Report
Once we finished cleaning the beach we headed over to Windsurf City Cyprus at Mackenzie Beach for some delicious sandwiches made by Coffeeology 101 and sponsored by Toyota. We then engaged in free trials of watersports (windsurfing, SUP boards, catamaran). A big thank you to Toyota and our friends (and Partners) Windsurf City Cyprus.
Last, but not least, to all the wonderful people that gathered together and made this event a success.
