Embracing a Greener Plate: Choosing Veganism for the Environment

Animal farming is incredibly water-intensive. It takes thousands of liters of water to produce a single pound of meat. After all, why grow crops for animals to eat, when we could just grow different crops that we eat?

Deforestation to create grazing land and grow feed crops for livestock significantly contributes to habitat loss and threatens global biodiversity. By embracing a vegan lifestyle, we reduce demand for these destructive practices, supporting the preservation of diverse ecosystems and the countless species that depend on them.

Ocean Health

Overfishing and destructive fishing practices have put immense strain on marine ecosystems. The seafood industry not only depletes fish populations but also causes collateral damage to non-target species and disrupts marine habitats. Choosing plant-based protein sources helps alleviate pressure on oceans, allowing them to recover and thrive.

The transition to a vegan lifestyle is more than just a dietary choice; it’s a profound commitment to environmental stewardship. By reducing our reliance on animal products, we contribute to a more sustainable, equitable, and compassionate world.

If going totally vegan seems out of the question to you at the moment, why not try just being vegan at home, or choosing a few days a week without meat or dairy, choosing meals made with grains, pulses or meat substitutes instead.

The Mediterranean diet has thousands of dishes that do not include meat or dairy, so try experimenting and you may even notice some health benefits too.
